Moving outdoor classroom project forward

Berk Botanical Garden shade structure4Creating an outdoor classroom at Myers Middle School, as we propose to do, may take considerably more than a village – maybe a village and a team and a movement. And maybe more than that. Thus, we would be so pleased if you would be part of it, maybe by contributing ideas, or possibly a bit of knowledge or elbow grease or perhaps introducing to us to other people or resources. Involvement can surely range from helping to address regulatory requirements and estimating construction costs to planning longer-range funding requirements, drafting detailed plans for specific elements and communicating and to fundraising.

We have built a list of pieces of the project we could really use help with. And, of course, we are steadily adding more. Here is a bit about one big item:

The notion of an outdoor classroom started with a conversation about building a place where classes could sit and get some shade. Maybe that means a park-like pavilion with some picnic tables. Or maybe it could be something a bit more distinctive. Either way, we are in the market for ideas. See something in your travels that might be a model? Please photograph it and send it to us at

thevegetableproject@gmail.com. See something in a magazine or online that you can share? Have an idea that you can sketch?
